Beta vulgaris. Fordhook outperformed all Swiss chards in our trials. Dark-green, savoyed leaves. Enlarged white stems with crisp and delicate flavor that reminds us of a mild celery. Plant early and often.

Companion plants include: onions. Dislikes: pole beans.

Description

CULTURE: Transplanting not recommended.

SOIL: Chard prefers deep, rich, well-composted soil, but tolerates average soil, if provided enough trace minerals and sun.

HARVEST: Stimulate continued production by harvesting mature outer leaves first.

SEED PRODUCTION: Swiss chard is wind pollinated and is from the same species and will cross pollinate with beets. Separate varieties up to 1 mile for purity.

SUGGESTED Individual Portion: 1/4 Cup.
